Shopping in Thessaloniki
 |
I have always believed that shopping is one of the greatest pleasures and can be a very enjoyable habit, that’s why I consider a form of entertainment.
Thessaloniki is famous for its central market places, especially those between Nikis Boulevard and Egnatia str., to their parallels Tsimiski and Mitropoleos str., as well as Agias Sofias str., Aristotelous str., Venizelou and Paleon Patron Germanou str: these streets are full of stores that can meet the demands of any taste and purse. An alternative shopping suggestion is the pedestrian zone of Gounari str. on Navarinou Square.

Aristotelous Street, ideal for shopping | If you prefer big shopping malls you should go to Plateia Assos Odeon mall in the centre of the city or head to the east towards Pilea in Mediterranean Cosmos where commercial stores, cafes, restaurants and a cinema are all gathered. There is also the new Hondos Center Apollonia Politia department store in an area of 20.000 square metres (it is towards the airport area, opposite IKEA).
A completely different aspect of shopping is found in the old stores of Plateia Prosfigikis Agoras (Refugee Market Square) at Bit Pazar.
 |
Thessaloniki is also famous for its top-quality food markets, the biggest of which is Modiano Market on Ermou street. The rectangular one-floor building covered with a glass roof houses butcher’s and fish shops as well as fish stores. | Tsipouradika (café-like establishments serving ouzo, tsipouro and snacks) and taverns operate lately in this market place and offer an ideal suggestion for a short break after hours of shopping!! Near Aristotelous Square you can find the covered market of Kapani (Vlali) while on Venizelou street there is Bezesteni, a place where textile transactions took place in the 15th century and today one can find jewelry and other accessories. |
